Project at a Glance

Holonics developed an innovative decision support tool to assist in estimating the impact of man-made barriers on eel habitat. The tool made use of the latest Google, ESRI and Oracle technologies and integrated the most up-to-date scientific knowledge on eel habitat with topographic and hydrographic data.

Background

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), in collaboration with the Ministère du développement durable, de l’environnement et des parcs du Québec (MDDEP), the Ministère des ressources naturelles et de la faune du Québec (MRNF) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, had a need for a dynamic geospatial decision support system to present a view of lost eel habitat caused by man-made barriers and to assist managers in identifying development projects that could contribute to improving access to quality habitat and the free movement of eel.

Solution Detail

There were two keys to the success of the Geospatial Decision Support System (GDSS). The first was to leverage the new Javascript API's from ESRI. This allowed Holonics to create a feature-rich Web 2.0 application that provides feedback to what-if scenarios instantaneously. The second key was Holonics advanced Oracle Spatial expertise that was leveraged to develop advanced network tracing tools which provide the network analysis required to support decisions. Holonics' expertise and innovation in the development of spatial data solutions ensured that the project met its goals.

The solution was developed using the following technologies:

  • ESRI ArcGIS Server 9.3
  • ESRI ArcGIS REST API
  • ArcGIS JavaScript Extension for Google Maps
  • ASP .Net, AJAX
  • Oracle Spatial
